Monoethylene Glycol

Product Description

Ethylene glycol (ethane-1,2-diol) is an organic compound with the formula (CH2OH)2. It is an odorless, colorless, sweet-tasting syrup. Monoethylene glycol (MEG) is moderately toxic. MEG is conventionally produced through the hydrolysis of ethylene oxide (EO), which itself is obtained via ethylene oxidation.

Some 90% of the global consumption of MEG is used mainly as a raw material in the manufacturing process of polyester fibre and PET. Polyester fibre is found primarily in textile products (sportswear, carpets, upholstery). Special types of polyester fibres are used in the automotive industry (seatbelts, airbags) and in the construction (PU for isolation, painting) and transport sectors (ropes, tarpaulins). PET is best-known for its role in the manufacture of soft drink bottles.

Monoethylene glycol is a clear, colorless and hygroscopic liquid, with moderately viscous. It is completely miscible with water and many organic liquids.

Specifications of MEG

Monoethylene glycol (MEG) is most commonly used as chemical intermediate in the manufacture of polyester resins and textile fibers. MEG is also wildly used as automotive antifreeze due to its low freezing point when mixed with water and used as heat transfer fluids for ventilation and airconditioning systems.
